Sixty years of walking this road
Got a story I think you oughta know

I was born in a shack outside a one-stop town
Daddy left before the rain turned the red dirt brown
Mama taught me to pray when the belly got empty
Said the Lord’d meet me where I been

I ran fast from that cross when I was twenty-one
Thought I could make my own way, have my own fun
Got tangled in lies, got money then got greedy
Lost everything when the deal went bad on me

I hit rock bottom in a jail cell cold
Didn’t have nobody but the Lord to hold

I fell so far I thought I’d never get up
My heart was broke, my cup was empty
He reached down low and lifted my head
Put my feet on solid rock again

I had a good run, then I had a bad fall
Lost my wife, lost my job, lost my all
Drank away the days till I couldn’t see the light
Forgot every word that mama ever taught me right

I cried out loud in the dark that night
Didn’t think He’d hear a sinner like I

I cried so hard I thought my heart would break
Didn’t deserve the grace He gave
He washed my sin as white as snow
Turned my bitter into sweet and whole

Ain’t saying I’m perfect, ain’t saying I don’t slip
But I got a Savior who holds my grip
He picked me up when I couldn’t stand
Gave me a new life in His hands

Now I walk every day with Him by my side
He turns my darkness into light
Rise and fall, He’s got my soul
