Another year has lived and flown
Another turn my road has spun
I've learned to tell true flight from mirages sown
By worry born, by fear begun

So many times I tried to read
The hints and silences unspoken
Till I learned: no love can feed
On another's avoidance, cold and broken

No more will I save s alone
That no one builds to me in return
No more wear emptiness not my own
Nor make another's words my concern

Some people are like rooms without a wall
Full of light, of images, of motion
But take one step — and in that moment all
That's left is echo of reflection's ocean

I've learned: not everyone who's near
Can walk beside you from the start
And not each lovely talk you hear
Springs from the homeland of the heart

Now honesty is closer than a dream
That substitutes itself for what is real
An emptiness that's clear I now esteem
More than the lie that slowly makes the spirit reel

And if pain knocked for years upon my door
Perhaps not to become my fate
It bore a light I'd not seen before
That taught: don't part from self, walk straight

I've grown quieter, but not colder
I've grown stricter, but not unkind
I've simply learned to choose, as years turn over
Not the blaze of feeling, but the lasting kind

And maybe this new circle of my days
Won't bring the answers promised, it is true
But I step forth upon these new-found ways
Without the thirst for phantom light I knew

Though many winters still lie ahead
And meetings that may never come
I only want, one day, to find instead
A love where souls breathe as one
