Father William
They said,
God bless you, father William!
In a faraway-land that is hot and dry
There are countless people, you have to try
And save those unfortunate souls!
The chaplain spent all night awake
He prayed and smoked, wept up a lake,
Afraid the natives may eat him whole.
Oh, God Almighty, save my soul!
By morning he was pale, but firm in his belief,
He came aboard a ship and sailed across the sea.
And only when he saw the golden sparkling sand,
And only when he saw the sky of the foreign land,
He breathed a heavy sigh, sat down beneath a palm
To watch Jamaican girls who bathed in sea and sun
Of all the people here, he realized deep down,
In need of peace and faith, he was the only one.
Father William, oh, Willy, will you
Go to Jamaica land?
Fiat Roma, oh, Willy, (will you),
Et ubi illa nunc est?
