I still remember that summer

Like it was yesterday

Seventeen and broke as hell
Pumpin' gas outside that shell
Old black chevy, rust and dust
Thought that thing was fast enough

Then you pulled up with your friends
Laughin' through the rolled-down wind
Sunlight caught your auburn hair
And for a second i forgot to stare

You asked me if the road went west
I pointed out beyond the crest

Every friday after dark
We'd meet behind the baseball park
Cherry coke and county fairs
Small-town nights and summer air

Wish kids could feel that feeling now

Just two kids learning little things
