Lo, how a rose e'er blooming from tender root hath sprung
Of Jesse's lineage coming, as men of old have sung
Brought forth her flower bright
Amid the cold of winter, and in the dark midnight

The rose which I am singing whereof Isaiah told
Is Mary purest maiden who bears the holy child
At God's eternal will
She bore for us a Saviour and stays a virgin still

O flower whose radiance tender with sweetness fills the air
Dispel in glorious splendour the darkness everywhere
True man yet very God
From sin and death now save us, and share our heavy load
