The Mormo's Fair The Hound Stands

Текст песни

They said no spear could pierce his skin
No king could bend his will
But the gods don’t kill with iron
They kill with the thread they spin

Born of the sun and a mother’s shame
Sétanta they called him before the fame
A boy with a hurley, a heart of stone
He struck the hound and he made it his own
From that day the name was a brand on his flesh
Cú Chulainn — the Hound, the untamed, the fresh

But the warp-spasm took him when the battle came near
His skin turned inside out, his eyes filled with fear
Not fear for himself — fear for the ones in his way
A monster of Ulster who prays for the day

The Hound stands alone on the field of red
With the spear of destiny lodged in his head
They say he was cursed before he drew breath
A hero who dies, but never tastes death

He loved Emer with a warrior’s heart
But the gods sent Fand to tear them apart
A woman of shadow, a queen of the sea
She wove him a dream that could never be free
He walked between worlds with a foot in each tide
And the geassa he broke were the ones where he died

Three geassa bound him — three chains on his soul
Eat no dog’s flesh, refuse no beggar’s bowl
And never turn back from the road to your grave
The last one he broke was the one that he gave

The Hound stands alone on the field of red
With the spear of destiny lodged in his head
They say he was cursed before he drew breath
A hero who dies, but never tastes death

I am the crow on your shoulder, Cú Chulainn
I am the ford where your horses will drown
I came to you three times before the last morning
Three times you refused, and three times I wore the crown
Now the spears are sharpened, the cauldron is cold
You’ll die on your feet like the heroes of old

He tied himself to the standing stone
With his own torn belt and his own crushed bone
He faced the army with the sun in his eyes
And the Morrigan perched where the shadow lies

No spear shall find my back
No king shall see me fall
I die on my feet with my face to the foe
And the ravens will carry it all

Three days they waited, afraid to draw near
For the Hound still stood, though the light disappeared
His sword in his hand, his eyes to the sky
A hero who lived and a hero who died

Then the crow came down and she touched his brow
And the stone stood empty — he was gone somehow

Cú Chulainn
The Hound stands still
Cú Chulainn
The Hound stands still
