Текст песни

The rain fell again at the dacha I lingered
Lay down for some sleep but the trouble was simple
I couldn't drift off tired of tossing and turning
I dressed and went out to the forest for walking

I walked on and on ventured deep without knowing
And suddenly feared I had lost all my bearings
But somewhere afar I could barely distinguish
The soft bark of dogs and the trilling of small birds

I pushed through the brush and quite soon in the clearing
I saw there a house behind tall fences standing
I came up to it soaked right through to my marrow
But found in it neither a gate nor an opening

I climbed the high fence on a branch bent and lowered
And there I saw birds in a cage made of straw woven
I knew their old tongue though I spoke it but poorly
I looked at them there and my heart filled with pity

And suddenly wished to do good for these creatures
I said to them Shall I just open your prison
They answered me back If we ever desired it
We'd long ago flown off each one to some far place

But we wouldn't dare even think of such notions
Besides we've forgotten the way to go flying
And here we live grandly so don't come disturbing
And leave our old cage right exactly where standing

I saw that the birds were not glad of my coming
And moved further on through the dark garden's shadows
And there bound in chains in the rain in the blackness
The dogs sat and howled in their mournful complaining

They sat there and froze beneath skies wide and open
And they had been beaten so cruelly and brutal
I came up to them in my heart wishing to help them
But they hurled away from me barking and snarling

I saw then the reason the dogs were so frightened
For losing their master would terrify them all
He'll come in the morning and draw out his whip then
Though throwing them rotten old bones still he'll feed them

Behind the house turned in a mood dark and dreary
I saw there some people my heart sank within me
Their eyes were bound shut with the cloth tightly fastened
And tightly their mouths had been sewn up with stitches

In coarse linen shirts and barefooted they wandered
They walked one behind one another in circles
And just as I reached out my hand there to touch them
I heard a strange voice Leave them be do not bother

For they are all blind and their faith that is sightless
For many long years now compels them to trust in
That to heaven's gardens the road leads them onward
Don't waste all your time go your way now with godspeed

I can't quite recall how I left that dark forest
At dawn drenched in sweat on the porch I awakened
A dream so disturbing that night came upon me
That I must have run and then fallen I reckon

But sharp in my memory frozen this image
That someone was dragging me down a small footpath
And still I keep crying Wake up now you people
Where are you all going no joy will await you

For you are not dogs and you're not birds in prison
With such a sad life you should never make peace no

But if it was dreaming then how can I fathom
Where I found a feather and tuft of dog's fur held
